BLOG - THOUGHTS ON GETTING INTERNATIONAL LEISURE TRAVEL MOVING AGAIN

February 15, 2021 - Jonathan Wigley, CEO & Founder of AHS

With the tremendous Covid 19 vaccination efforts in certain countries/regions and less so in others, a new meaning has been brought to the previously discussed and contemplated "Air Bubbles" between countries and regions. In the past "Air Bubbles" were considered between countries where infections were perceived to be under control but as we have navigated through this pandemic we have come to realize that the only sustainable control of pandemic impacts are vaccinations of populations and the perception of things being under control have been distorted by low testing levels or even non reporting of infections.

Now if the reasons for wanting to get international leisure travel moving again are motivated by professional and/or personal desires, we can all agree WE WANT IT, WE NEED IT. Now here is the tricky part as I understand it (not being scientifically blessed at all), is that the vaccines are designed to protect us from getting sick from the Covid 19 virus but not to stop us being infected, thus unrestricted international leisure travel will only really come about between countries/regions which have vaccinated populations otherwise infections could still happen as a vaccinated person who may be infected could infect and cause serious even fatal symptoms to a population who has not been vaccinated. Once again some countries/regions whose populations are not vaccinated may decide within reason the risks are worth the rewards though I doubt it. Lets face facts, any major volume of international leisure travel will not materialize with long enforced quarantines at the destination as well as other restrictions, we should not fool ourselves.

So in my summary I would say international travel of significant volumes for 2021 will only happen between countries who have vaccinated their populations thus based on current pace of vaccinations this means USA, UK, EU, Iceland, Israel, UAE, Seychelles, Maldives, Chile and Singapore. We all hope more countries can find ways and means to ramp up vaccinations so international travel in general can start again for us all. This as always is just my opinion. Bottom line is that we have never been closer to the end of the terrible pandemic and its impacts.
